Principal's Corner
Mrs. Kristi Schwartz

Dear Symons Families,
Welcome to Symons Elementary School, which is home to Milan Area Schools' second, third, and fourth-grade students. Our goal at Symons is to teach the whole child by focusing on social-emotional learning, study skills, and academics.
After nearly three decades in education, I've learned that every child who walks through Symons' doors brings their own unique story, dreams, and potential. As I begin my 27th year serving students and families, I'm reminded daily that our most incredible privilege is nurturing not just young minds, but young hearts. I believe every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and supported as they grow into the remarkable individuals they're meant to become.
Throughout my years, I have appreciated the collaboration between our staff and families in helping students learn valuable life lessons. As an educator and a mom, teaching students to communicate through reading, writing, and speaking is a critical skill for success; thinking logically with mathematical concepts is another essential competency. Additionally, specific character values equip our students with a well-rounded education that enables them to be successful members of our society. Here are three important lessons students should learn by the time they leave Symons Elementary School:
Treating Others with Care and Respect. This lesson evolves from basic kindness in 2nd grade to more profound understanding by 4th grade. Young children start by learning to share, use kind words, and help classmates who are hurt or sad. As they mature, they develop genuine empathy, understanding that others have different feelings, backgrounds, and perspectives that deserve respect. By 4th grade, they're able to stand up for others who are being treated unfairly and actively work to include everyone, recognizing that differences make communities stronger rather than weaker.
Taking Responsibility for Your Actions and Growth. This begins with basic honesty about mistakes in 2nd grade and grows into personal integrity by 4th grade. Early on, children learn that telling the truth and owning their actions is better than lying or blaming others. As they develop, they understand that mistakes are learning opportunities rather than failures. By upper elementary, they take ownership not just of their errors but of their effort and improvement, knowledge that they have control over their choices and can shape who they become through their actions.
Persevering Through Challenges with Emotional Maturity. This begins with understanding that struggling is normal and evolves into genuine resilience. In 2nd grade, children learn that they don't have to be perfect and that trying again is a valuable approach. By 3rd grade, they're managing their emotions better when things get difficult, learning to pause and think before reacting. By the 4th grade, they've developed a growth mindset, understanding that abilities improve with practice and that setbacks are temporary. They can bounce back from disappointments and even help others do the same.
These three lessons lay a foundation for lifelong character development, enabling children to become individuals who care for others, take responsibility for themselves, and face life's challenges with strength and wisdom.
I am proud to be a member of Symons Elementary School and look forward to working with our exceptional students, supportive parents, and talented teaching staff, who work tirelessly to provide our students with the best possible education.
